American Tragedy

Sharon I’m not one those people who boo hoos about Americans butchering beloved sitcoms from around the world. I don’t even want to be someone who talks about tv, but while on the subject…Absolutely Fabulous?! Why on earth?

I did not watch the American debut of Kath & Kim last night, mostly because I forgot it was on, but I also kind of forgot because there’s no way that it won’t suck because Americans, particularly American women, can’t do grotesque properly. It’s not so much that they’re incapable but that they can’t allow themselves to be ugly.

To pick a seasonal example: the obsession with sexy Halloween costumes. Devils, witches, yes, Ghostbusters and apparently now Freddy Krugers (I walked past this one in a window display last night, and am still confused why the lady Freddy would slash her own sweater) all must be sexy. Halloween is supposed to be scary (or at least funny) not sexy, duh.

The Australian Kim is not Selma Blair skinny (though hardly fat) and that’s why her inappropriate love of exposed thongs and muffin top sporting works. Selma Blair does not bulge out of her clothing and she’s too Hollywood pretty. Actress not comedian.

But the character I’m most curious about is Sharon. Who on earth would play the role of the overweight, sexually ambiguous friend with a bowl cut? I imagine the American version would change the role, trade deadpan hysterical for goofiness and cast someone more conventionally attractive. How about Anna Faris or Amanda Bynes?

Oh…it appears this character will be reinterpreted for the US as a gay man. I don’t even know what to think about that.
