Martin (Not Lawrence)

Martin

Do you ever say that something is your favorite, maybe not the most favorite, a favorite lumped in with an unordered list of favorite things, but in reality it might not be something you'd think is all that great anymore. It's an old favorite that you think defines you. It might even be a favorite you never read all the way through or watched from beginning to end.

I've listed Martin before and then helpfully added Martin (Romero) so strangers won't think I mean the Martin Lawrence TV show, which might seem obvious but sometimes I also list Norbit as a favorite, which isn't a lie.

I caught 60% of Martin on cable one night in the early 2000s, the last time I lived alone, in Sunset Park. I like to imply that it was a longer time ago because to first see Martin as a teen would be better and more formative (Come Back Little Sheba fills this role really) than at nearly 30. I hate being a latecomer. All I remember is that it wasn't really a vampire movie, despite the gore it's not schlocky, and was kind of sexy in a '70s rustbelt way mixed with a big dose of teen misfit–obviously, one of the best things I'd ever seen, accidentally or not.

Monday I got to watch Martin on the big screen and it was even more amazing than my foggy barely post-millennium memory. (I didn't even recall the married woman/teen seduction plotline) The actor who played Martin, John Amplas, now 65, was present for a Q&A afterward. Seeing Martin again in this format might be one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I can now say that Martin (Romero) is one of my favorite movies and mean it.
